Overview: The CSSD Technician is responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, packing, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments, medical equipment, and supplies used throughout the hospital. The technician ensures that all reprocessing activities are performed in accordance with infection control guidelines and hospital protocols to prevent healthcare-associated infections.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Receive soiled instruments from OTs, ICUs, wards, and procedure rooms.
  • Perform manual and mechanical cleaning of instruments using ultrasonic washers, washer-disinfectors, or enzymatic solutions.
  • Inspect instruments for damage or malfunction before sterilization and report to supervisor if needed.
  • Prepare and pack surgical instrument sets as per standard protocols and surgical lists.
  • Operate and monitor sterilizers (Steam/Autoclave, ETO, Plasma, etc.) ensuring proper loading techniques.
  • Use and document results of chemical and biological indicators to validate sterilization effectiveness.
  • Maintain sterility of packed instruments until dispatch and store sterilized instruments in designated clean areas maintaining first-in-first-out (FIFO) system
  • Issue and dispatch sterile supplies as per departmental requests and maintain records.
  • Maintain separation of sterile and non-sterile zones and prevent cross-contamination.
  • Participate in internal audits and follow SOPs as per infection control and accreditation guidelines
  • Report any equipment malfunction or deviation in process immediately.
  • Adhere to infection prevention protocols including proper PPE usage and hand hygiene.
  • Ensure safe handling of sharps and contaminated instruments.
  • Assist in the proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste generated in CSSD.
  • Cooperate with OT nurses, ICU staff, and other departments to meet their sterile supply requirements.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Diploma in CSSD / Sterilization Technology Or a Certificate course in CSSD from a recognized institution.
  • 5+ years of experience working in CSSD in a hospital. Familiarity with modern sterilization equipment and SOPs

  • Familiarity with HIS, EMR, e-prescriptions, and clinical pharmacy practices.
  • Experience in handling insurance claims, billing, and drug substitutions based on formulary.
  • Working knowledge of drug interactions, contraindications, and therapeutic equivalents.
